You probably want to preserve the trees that are on your property as well as possible. After all, you might love the shade and beauty that they add to your yard. Along with having to worry about how the weather will affect your trees, it's also important to realize that there are different pests that can cause a lot of damage to your trees, too. These are some of the pests that you will need to keep an eye on.

Emerald Ash Borers

You might have never heard of emerald ash borers, which originated in northeastern Asia and that feeds on ash trees. Since they don't have a lot of natural enemies in North America, they can be a particularly big problem for trees in the United States, Canada and Mexico. These green beetles lay their eggs in the crevices of the bark on ash trees, and they can "bore" their way through the trees. When this happens, this can cause serious problems for the tree.

Termites

Termites don't just cause problems for homes; they can cause problems for trees, too. Even though termites do prefer dead wood, you may still find them on your live trees. In addition to eating your trees and therefore seriously damaging them, you also have to worry about termites being in such close proximity to your home and eventually feasting on the wooden building materials that were used to build your house.

Woodpeckers

Woodpeckers do not actually eat trees, but they instead peck at the bark in hopes of finding food. They also peck at trees to look for hollow cavities that they can use to create a nest. Even though many people find woodpeckers to be attractive birds because of their unique look, they can cause a lot of damage to the trees on your property. Additionally, woodpeckers can seriously damage your home, too.

Squirrels

Even though they can be a lot of fun to watch because of their athletic abilities and their antics, squirrels can cause some damage to your trees. They do not usually cause as much damage as some people think they do, because they typically only live in holes that are already existing in trees. However, they can strip bark off of your trees, which can cause damage and can make your trees look unsightly.

There are a lot of pests that can cause damage to your trees. Keeping an eye out for these pests, working with a tree care professional and using the right products can help you protect your trees from damage, however.
